The Teotihuacan Valley is located in the northeastern region of the State of Mexico and includes several municipalities. It is characterized by a temperate, semi-arid and sub-humid climate, with moderate rainfall and an average elevation of 2,200 meters above sea level. Its current landscape is semi-dry, featuring hills, plains, and vegetation like pepper trees, cacti, and maguey plants, along with fauna typical of the central Mexican highlands.
In the past, the region had abundant bodies of water connected to the Valley of Mexico lake system, as well as springs and rivers essential for agriculture and water supply. Its volcanic origin, with ancient craters formed during the Tertiary period, provided fertile soils and construction materials. The main elevations include Patlachique Hill, Malinalco Hill, and Cerro Gordo, the latter formerly known as Tonan, meaning “hill of our mother.”

Meaning
(Nahuatl: Teōtihuácān, “Place where the gods were created; City of the Gods”) is the name given to what was one of the largest cities in Mesoamerica during the pre-Hispanic period. The toponym is of Nahuatl origin and was used by the Mexica people; however, the original name given to the city by its own inhabitants is unknown.
